ToMIDI runs Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch model in your browser, the same engine as the official demo, and adds the steps between detection and a finished file: instrument presets, quantize, snap to key, tempo and time signature, note editing with undo, a score view and MusicXML export. It is free, needs no sign-up, and your audio never leaves your device. Where Spotify's own Basic Pitch tools are the better fit, this page says so too.

Basic Pitch is an open-source audio to MIDI model from Spotify's Audio Intelligence Lab, released in June 2022 under the Apache 2.0 licence (GitHub). It is tiny, with under 17,000 parameters and under 20 MB of peak memory according to its about page, and it hears several notes at once on almost any instrument or voice, pitch bends included. The free demo at basicpitch.spotify.com runs in your browser: record or drop a file, adjust note segmentation, confidence, pitch range, minimum note length and the MIDI tempo, then download the MIDI. Facts as of November 2026.
Run Basic Pitch on a FileBoth run the same Spotify model in your browser; the difference is what happens after the notes are found. Checked against the demo, the Basic Pitch README on GitHub and our own converter in November 2026.

Basic Pitch finds the notes. These are the steps between that and a file you can use, the part a bare Basic Pitch MIDI converter leaves to you.
Piano, Voice, Guitar, Bass and Solo melody each tune the note settings and the score layout. They reread the cached model output, so a switch takes a moment, not a rerun.
Switch between As played and Quantized, pick a 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 grid, and see faint outlines where each note was really played.
The detected key and tempo go into the .mid. Snap stray notes into the key, fix a half or double tempo, tap the beat or set the time signature.
Select, move, resize, add and delete notes in the piano roll, with keyboard shortcuts and undo for every step.
Notes the model doubts are drawn dashed. Keep them, or leave them all out of the result and the export with one switch.
See the notes engraved on a single staff or a grand staff, then export MusicXML, PNG or SVG, or print the score to PDF.
Real output from the Bach sample in the converter above: Prelude in C, played by Kimiko Ishizaka, public domain. Step through what ToMIDI does after the model has listened.

47 notes as Basic Pitch heard them; 7 uncertain ones are dashed.
What you are looking at
Basic Pitch heard the opening two bars as 47 notes, 7 of them short or quiet enough to be marked uncertain: mostly overtones and re-strikes from the sustain. Leaving those out and quantizing to a 1/16 grid at the detected 111 BPM turns the raw detection into an even run of broken chords that reads cleanly as a score.
Same model, different jobs. Reach for the official tools in these cases.
The basic-pitch Python library converts several files in one command and fits into your own pipeline. ToMIDI converts one file at a time.
Spotify's tools can write pitch bends for slides and vibrato. ToMIDI exports plain notes without bend data.
The library can save the model's raw output (NPZ) and its note events (CSV) for research. ToMIDI keeps those inside the browser.
If all you want is a fast MIDI file with no edits, the official demo at basicpitch.spotify.com is as simple as it gets.
No Python and no install: four steps from a recording to a cleaned-up MIDI file and a score.
Drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG or AAC file, use the soundtrack of an MP4 or WEBM video, or record up to a minute. Files up to 300 MB open, and the first 10 minutes are analysed.
The model, about 1 MB, loads once and runs in your tab. Notes appear in the piano roll while it works.
Choose an instrument preset, then quantize, snap to key and set the tempo. None of it reruns the model.
Download the .mid quantized or as played, MusicXML for notation apps, PNG or SVG, or print the score.
What you can do with Spotify Basic Pitch audio to MIDI results here, before they reach your DAW or notation app.
Basic Pitch is instrument-agnostic, which is its strength and also why one set of settings never suits everything. Piano keeps chords and uses a grand staff; Voice keeps one note at a time and smooths wobbly pitch; Solo melody keeps a single line; Guitar and Bass narrow the range. Each preset reruns only the note extraction on the cached model output.
Try the PresetsThe model keeps your exact timing, which sounds natural but looks messy on a DAW grid. Quantize to 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32, compare As played and Quantized by ear, and move bar 1 a beat earlier or later so the downbeat lands where it should.
Quantize a TakeThe official demo asks you for a MIDI tempo. ToMIDI detects one, plus the key and a 4/4 or 3/4 time signature, and writes all three into the .mid with a valid key signature. Halve or double the tempo, tap it, and snap stray notes into the key. For tempo alone, the BPM finder is quicker.
Set Key and TempoSwitch from the piano roll to an engraved score that follows playback. Export MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale or Dorico, PNG or SVG for documents, or print it to PDF. Already have a MIDI file? Use MIDI to sheet music.

Facts as of November 2026, from Spotify's pages, the GitHub README and our own converter.
Basic Pitch by Spotify is a free, open-source audio to MIDI model from the company's Audio Intelligence Lab, released in 2022 under the Apache 2.0 licence. It is lightweight, polyphonic and instrument-agnostic, and it detects pitch bends. You can try it in Spotify's web demo, install it as a Python library, or run it here with editing and a score view.
Yes to both. The official demo at basicpitch.spotify.com is free and runs in your browser, and the code is open source on GitHub. ToMIDI is another free way to use Basic Pitch online, with presets, quantize, key and tempo, editing and sheet music export added.
It runs the same model through Spotify's own JavaScript package, so the detected notes start from the same place. What differs is everything after: presets, cleanup, editing, the score view and the export formats. ToMIDI is not made by or affiliated with Spotify.
It depends on the source, and its README says it works best on one instrument at a time. A single voice or melody instrument usually comes through well, solo piano is good but chords need checking, and full mixes are rough. We have not measured percentages yet, so we give none; the dashed uncertain notes show where to look first.
No. The model is built for pitched notes, so drum hits come out as random notes, and ToMIDI inherits that. For percussion, use your DAW's drum to MIDI feature or a drum-specific tool.
It runs on anything, but a full mix puts every instrument into one track with plenty of extra notes. It does best on one instrument or voice at a time, and ToMIDI has no stem separation yet, so convert a solo recording or an isolated part when you can.
Not on its own: the demo and the library produce MIDI. ToMIDI adds a score view on top, with a grand staff for piano, and exports MusicXML, PNG, SVG and a PDF through print. To engrave a MIDI file you already have, use MIDI to sheet music.
No. The .mid from ToMIDI holds plain notes with no pitch bend data. If you need bends for slides and vibrato, use Spotify's Python library, whose README says its MIDI comes complete with pitch bends; the official demo also advertises pitch bend detection.
For one instrument or voice, yes, and MP3 works like any other format. Basic Pitch MP3 to MIDI results get rough on dense mixes, as with any source. The MP3 to MIDI page has tips for converting songs.
They do different jobs. Melodyne edits the pitch and timing of the recording itself and exports MIDI from its assistant edition up, after a 30 day trial. Basic Pitch only produces MIDI, but it is free and open source. To get the notes into your DAW, the free route through ToMIDI is enough; to retune a vocal, Melodyne is the tool.
Not any more. NeuralNote, the open-source plugin, was built on Basic Pitch until version 2.0, released in October 2026, which switched to a model called MuScriptor with weights licensed for non-commercial use. For the original model, use the Python library, the demo or ToMIDI.
For the Python library, run pip install basic-pitch, then call basic-pitch with an output folder and your audio files. To skip installing anything, use the converter at the top of this page: it runs the model in your browser.
MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and AAC, plus the soundtrack of MP4 and WEBM video, up to 300 MB with the first 10 minutes analysed. You can also record from the microphone. Our free audio to MIDI converter on the homepage uses the same engine.
No. ToMIDI runs the model inside your browser tab, so the file never leaves your device. The model, about 1 MB, downloads the first time you convert.
The same engine, set up for each kind of recording.
