What MP3 to MIDI Conversion Really Does

Knowing how to turn MP3 to MIDI starts with what each file holds. An MP3 is a recording: compressed sound, thousands of samples a second. A MIDI file holds no sound at all, only instructions: which note, when it starts, how long it lasts and how hard it is played. So you cannot rename or change MP3 to MIDI the way you change MP3 to WAV. MP3 to MIDI file conversion is transcription. The converter listens to the music and writes the notes down, much as a musician does by ear. That is what makes the result so flexible: any instrument can play it, your DAW can change its tempo without touching the pitch, and it can be transposed, edited or printed as a score. The 26 second piano MP3 in our example weighs 356 KB; the MIDI made from it is 1.3 KB.

Why Some MP3 Conversions Come Out Messy

Most stray notes trace back to what is in the recording, not to a setting. Before you blame the converter, check the file for these:

  • Several instruments at once: a full mix comes back as one track with every part blended together.
  • Drums and percussion: a hit has no clear pitch, so it turns into short random notes.
  • Heavy reverb or delay: echoes ring on and show up as extra, quieter notes.
  • A badly re-encoded or very low bitrate file: swirly artifacts can read as faint ghost notes.
  • Bright overtones: a strong harmonic an octave up can sound like a second note, which is why doubtful notes are drawn dashed.

Why Turn MP3 Into MIDI With ToMIDI

Unlike most online MP3 MIDI converter sites, nothing here waits in an upload queue. Everything happens on the page you are reading.

  • Starts the moment you drop

There is no Convert button. Decoding begins as soon as the file lands, and notes appear in the piano roll while the rest of the song is still being analysed.

  • Your MP3 stays on your device

The audio is decoded and transcribed inside your browser tab. Unreleased demos and private recordings are never sent to a server.

  • Free, full length, no sign-up

Convert MP3 to MIDI free: files up to 300 MB, the first 10 minutes analysed and the complete .mid to download. No 30 second cap and no watermark.

  • Spotify's Basic Pitch inside

The open-source model behind Spotify's own free demo, polyphonic and instrument agnostic, running locally on your computer.

  • Fix it before you export

Quantize, snap stray notes into the key, correct a tempo read at half or double speed and edit single notes, with undo.

  • Files for every app

MIDI quantized or as played, MusicXML for notation apps, PNG and SVG images of the score, or a PDF through the print dialog.

How to Convert MP3 to MIDI in Four Steps

Here is how to turn MP3 into MIDI, start to finish. A 20 second clip takes about 7 seconds the first time, model download included, and about a second after that.

  1. Drag the file onto the converter at the top of this page, or click Upload audio. Any MP3 your browser can play will do, up to 300 MB.

  2. The audio is mixed to mono at 22.05 kHz, then Basic Pitch scans it in short windows and finds each note's pitch, start, length and velocity. Tempo and key are worked out alongside.

  3. Play the MIDI against the original, choose an instrument preset, quantize to 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32, and correct the tempo or key if either came out wrong.

  4. Save it quantized or as played, with tempo, key and time signature written in, and drop it into FL Studio, Ableton Live, Logic Pro or any other DAW.

Built for Real MP3 to MIDI File Conversion

Tools that only transform MP3 to MIDI leave these jobs for later. Here they happen on the same page, before you download.

Instrument presets that switch instantly

Auto, Piano, Voice, Guitar, Bass and Solo melody each tune note detection to that instrument's range and attack; Voice, Bass and Solo melody keep one note at a time. The model runs once per file and a preset only re-reads its output, so the piano roll changes the moment you click.

Pick a Preset

Hear the MIDI against your MP3

Switch between Original, Mix and MIDI while it plays, or press A to flip, and missed or invented notes stand out at once. Notes the model was unsure about are drawn dashed: keep them, or leave them all out of the result and the export with one switch.

Compare Them Now

Tempo, key and bars that line up

The BPM and key are detected and written into the file. If a 70 BPM ballad reads as 140, one click halves it; you can also type a tempo or tap it in. Pick 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 or 6/8 and nudge bar 1 so the notes land on your grid. Need the numbers only? The key finder and BPM finder skip the transcription.

Line It Up

Sheet music from the same MP3

Flip the result to the score view to read the notes as notation. Export MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale or Dorico, save PNG or SVG images, or print and choose Save as PDF. For more layout options, open the .mid in MIDI to sheet music.

Drops straight into your DAW

Most people asking how to convert MP3 to MIDI format want one thing: a file their DAW opens. In FL Studio, drag the .mid onto an instrument in the Channel Rack or use File > Import > MIDI file. In Ableton Live, drop it on a MIDI track. Logic Pro builds a software instrument track and asks whether to import the tempo; say yes. GarageBand, Cubase and Reaper read the same file.

A Real MP3 to MIDI Result, Note for Note

Bach's Prelude in C, played by Kimiko Ishizaka: a public domain recording, trimmed to 26 seconds and saved as a mono MP3 of about 100 kbps. Below is exactly what the engine wrote.

What you are looking at

145 notes at 111.4 BPM in C major, 4/4, with 27 notes drawn dashed because the model was less sure of them. Open the same clip under Try a real sample in the converter above and every preset and control works on it. Starting from a lossless file instead? WAV to MIDI explains what changes.

MP3 to MIDI Accuracy: What to Expect

What is in the MP3 matters far more than its bitrate. We give no percentages until our own tests are published; this is what each kind of file tends to produce.

One voice or melody: works well

A sung line, a flute or a lead synth with little reverb comes through cleanly. The Voice preset smooths slides and vibrato, and Solo melody keeps one note at a time. More in voice to MIDI.

Solo piano: good, check the chords

Most notes land. Heavy pedal can smear chords and add short ghost notes, so use the Piano preset and review the dashed ones. More in piano audio to MIDI.

A full song: a rough sketch

Vocals, guitars, bass and drums all land in one track with plenty of extra notes. Treat it as a sketch, or convert an isolated stem if you have one.

Bitrate: less than you think

The model hears a 22.05 kHz mono version of your file, so 320 kbps and 192 kbps MP3s reach it in very similar shape. Very low bitrates are different: their artifacts can turn into faint ghost notes.

Who Uses an MP3 to MIDI Converter

Different people, different MP3s, one goal: notes you can work with. Think of it as a MIDI maker from MP3 files you already have.

Producers and beatmakers

Pull the hook or bassline out of your own demo, drop the MIDI on a synth and audition ten sounds in the time it takes to replay one.

Pianists and learners

Convert a recording of the piece you are learning, see every note in the piano roll and check tricky bars against the score view. Song to piano shows the notes on a keyboard.

Songwriters

Turn a phone memo or a rough bounce into MIDI before the idea fades, then arrange it properly in your DAW.

Teachers and arrangers

Get a first draft of a part from a reference MP3, correct it by ear and hand students MusicXML or a printed page.

Guitarists and bassists

Get the notes of a riff from your own recording with the Guitar or Bass preset. For playing tips and tabs, see guitar to MIDI.

Video and game creators

Reuse a melody from your own track as MIDI so you can re-voice it, change its key or loop it under a scene. Is the music inside a clip? Use MP4 to MIDI.

MP3 to MIDI FAQ

The questions people ask before they convert, with straight answers.

How do I convert MP3 to MIDI?

Here is how to convert MP3 into MIDI: drop the file on the converter at the top of this page. ToMIDI decodes it in your browser, Basic Pitch finds the notes and the piano roll fills in within seconds. Listen against the original, fix the tempo, key or timing if needed, then click Download .mid. There is no account and nothing to install.

Is this MP3 to MIDI converter free?

Yes, all of it. You can convert files up to 300 MB with the first 10 minutes analysed, and download the full-length .mid, MusicXML, PNG and SVG with no watermark and no sign-up.

What is the best MP3 to MIDI converter?

It depends on the job. For a free online MP3 to MIDI converter that keeps the file private and lets you fix the result before export, ToMIDI is built for exactly that. Melodyne edits the audio itself inside a DAW, and AnthemScore is a paid desktop app focused on sheet music. The comparison table above lists the free limits of each.

How accurate is AI MP3 to MIDI conversion?

It follows the recording. MP3 to MIDI AI such as Basic Pitch is reliable on a single voice or instrument, good but imperfect on solo piano and rough on a full band mix. We publish no accuracy percentage until our own tests are done, so compare the MIDI with the original before you download.

Can I convert a whole song, every instrument included?

You can convert it, but ToMIDI does not separate instruments: a full mix gives one track with every part blended together and many extra notes. If you have the stems, convert each one on its own and you get one clean MIDI part per stem.

Does the MP3 bitrate matter?

Less than people expect. The model listens to a 22.05 kHz mono version, so most files at 128 kbps and up sound much the same to it. Very low bitrates and copies re-encoded many times add artifacts that can become ghost notes. If you still have the original WAV, use WAV to MIDI instead.

Is there an MP3 to MIDI SoundFont I need to install?

No. A SoundFont is a bank of instrument samples used to play MIDI back; it plays no part in finding the notes. Once you have the .mid, load any SoundFont or virtual instrument in your DAW or player to choose its sound, or render it to audio with MIDI to MP3.

Is there an MP3 to MIDI converter download for Windows or Mac?

There is nothing to download or install: this MP3 into MIDI converter is a web page that runs in a modern browser on Windows, macOS or Linux; the only download is your .mid file. It also works in a phone browser, though longer files take a while there.

How do you convert MP3 to MIDI for FL Studio, Ableton or Logic?

Convert the MP3 here and click Download .mid. In FL Studio, drag the file onto a Channel Rack instrument or use File > Import > MIDI file. In Ableton Live, drop it on a MIDI track and load an instrument. In Logic Pro, drag it into the Tracks area and accept the tempo import.

Will the MIDI keep the tempo of my MP3?

Yes. The detected BPM is written into the file, and MIDI as played keeps the original timing so it lines up with the MP3 from 0:00. If the tempo was read at half or double speed, fix it with one click before you download, or type your project tempo so the notes land on your grid.

How good is MP3 to MIDI piano transcription?

Good on a clean solo piano recording, with chords worth a second look. Pick the Piano preset, check the dashed notes and switch to the score view, which uses a grand staff. For practice tools and tips, see piano audio to MIDI.

Is my MP3 uploaded or stored anywhere?

No. The file is decoded and converted inside your browser and never leaves your device. The page downloads the note model, about 1 MB, the first time you convert; after that the work happens locally.

Is MP3 to .mid the same as MP3 to MIDI?

Yes. .mid is the file extension of a Standard MIDI File, so an MP3 to .mid converter does exactly the same job. The file ToMIDI gives you opens in every DAW, notation app and MIDI player.

Why does my MIDI have extra or missing notes?

Extra notes usually come from overtones, reverb tails or drums; missing ones from soft notes buried under loud ones. Try the preset that matches your instrument, drop the dashed uncertain notes, snap stray notes to the key, or fix single notes by hand.

Can I edit the MIDI after converting?

Yes, right in the result: click a note to hear it, drag to move it, drag its end to resize it, double-click to add one and undo any change. For bigger edits across a whole file, open the .mid in the MIDI editor.

Can I convert other formats, not just MP3?

Yes. The same page also takes WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and AAC, plus the soundtrack of MP4 and WEBM video. For an overview of every source, start at the audio to MIDI converter on our homepage.
