Bounce a bass line or a lead from an old session, convert WAV to MIDI and try it on a new synth without replaying it.
ToMIDI turns WAV to MIDI for free in your browser: drop in a stem, a take or a full bounce and Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch model writes down the notes. No install, no sign-up, and even a 200 MB WAV never leaves your computer. Download MIDI that lines up with your audio from 0:00, or quantized to the grid.

A WAV file is raw, uncompressed sound: every sample your DAW or recorder captured, at 44.1 or 48 kHz, 16 or 24 bits, usually in stereo. A MIDI file is the opposite: no sound, just notes with a start, a length and a velocity. Going from one to the other is transcription, not a format change. ToMIDI first mixes your WAV to mono and resamples it to 22.05 kHz, the signal Basic Pitch was trained on, then the model listens in short windows and writes each note down. That is why a WAV to MIDI result depends on what is playing, not on how many bits the file has.
Drop a WAV NowLossless audio removes compression artifacts, but it also keeps every echo and overtone perfectly. These are the usual reasons a clean-sounding WAV still gives extra notes:
Big uncompressed files are exactly where an online WAV MIDI converter that uploads everything gets slow. This one never uploads anything.
The WAV is decoded and transcribed inside your browser tab, so a 200 MB bounce never crawls up to a server and unreleased stems stay private.
Files up to 300 MB with the first 10 minutes analysed, and the whole .mid to download. No trial, no watermark and no account.
MIDI as played keeps the exact timing of your WAV from 0:00. Quantized MIDI puts bar 1 on the first downbeat for a clean grid.
Bass, Voice, Guitar, Piano and Solo melody tune detection to the part you bounced, and switch instantly without running the model again.
The open-source model Spotify released for polyphonic, instrument-agnostic transcription, running locally on your machine.
Download MIDI quantized or as played, MusicXML for notation apps, PNG or SVG of the score, or print it to PDF.
From a bounce to a MIDI clip on the next track. A short stem takes a few seconds; our 10 second test WAV converted in 5.6 s, model download included.
Solo the track and export it as WAV from bar 1, dry if you can. Ableton: File > Export Audio/Video. Logic: File > Export > Track as Audio File. FL Studio: File > Export > Wave file.
Drag it onto the WAV to MIDI converter at the top of this page. Basic Pitch runs in your browser and the notes fill the piano roll while it works.
Pick the preset for that part, type your project tempo if it differs from the detected one, and check the key and time signature.
Choose MIDI as played to sit on top of the audio, or quantized for a tidy grid, then drag the .mid onto a MIDI track at bar 1.
Bounce, convert and bring the notes home without fighting the grid. A WAV to MIDI file converter should fit the way you already work.
After you convert WAV to MIDI, the as played file keeps every note where it happened in the WAV, so dropped at the same start point it lines up with the original. Type your project BPM before you download and the notes land on your grid too. Want the audio again later? MIDI to WAV renders it back.
Line Up a StemBounced a bass line? Use Bass, which listens from B0 to about C4, one note at a time. A lead goes to Solo melody, a vocal to Voice, keys to Piano. More instrument tips in voice to MIDI, piano audio to MIDI and guitar to MIDI.
Pick a PresetIn a WAV to MIDI result, notes the model is unsure about, often an overtone an octave above a real note, are drawn dashed. Review them, or turn off Show uncertain notes to leave them out of the result and the export. Hand edits stay put.
Check the Dashed NotesSwitch to the score view to read the part as notation, then export MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius, Finale or Dorico, PNG or SVG images, or print and save as PDF. For more layout control, use MIDI to sheet music.
See the ScoreWe rendered a 10 second A minor phrase, a lead over a bass line, to a 24-bit, 48 kHz stereo WAV, the way a DAW bounce comes out, and ran it through the WAV to MIDI converter above in Microsoft Edge with the Auto preset.
What you are looking at
We wrote 27 notes and the engine found 48. Almost every extra was an overtone an octave above a real note, and 20 of the 21 extras were drawn dashed. Turning off Show uncertain notes left 28: our 27 plus one overtone it was sure about. It read the tempo as exactly 100 BPM and the key as A minor, but put bar 1 two beats late, which two clicks on Move bar 1 a beat earlier fixed. Converted in 5.6 s, model download included.
Is WAV better than MP3 for MIDI? A little, and for a specific reason. Here is what helps and what makes no difference at all.
No compression artifacts means nothing smeared for the model to mistake for a note. The gain is clearest over low bitrate MP3s; over a good MP3 it is small. Only have an MP3? MP3 to MIDI covers it.
Everything is mixed to mono at 22.05 kHz before the model listens, so a 96 kHz, 32-bit float WAV gives essentially the same notes as a 44.1 kHz, 16-bit copy. Never upsample.
One instrument or voice converts well, solo piano is good with chords to check, and a full mix is a rough sketch. Bounce stems whenever you can.
A WAV keeps reverb and delay tails intact, and they become extra notes. For WAV to MIDI, bounce with effects off and add them back to the MIDI later.

Anyone with a WAV on their drive and a reason to want the notes instead of the sound.
Bounce a bass line or a lead from an old session, convert WAV to MIDI and try it on a new synth without replaying it.
Convert a dry vocal take to a MIDI melody to double it with an instrument or check the pitches you sang.
Recorded audio instead of MIDI by mistake? Pull the notes back out of the WAV and keep the take you liked.
DI or amp recordings convert to MIDI you can re-amp with a synth or write out as notation.
Get a first draft of a part from a lossless reference, correct it by ear and export MusicXML for your notation app.
Find the notes of a WAV loop or one-shot from your library, then rebuild it in the key your track needs. The key finder gives the key alone.
Straight answers to what people ask before they convert a WAV.
Drop the WAV on the converter at the top of this page. ToMIDI decodes it in your browser, Basic Pitch finds the notes and the piano roll fills in within seconds. Check the tempo, key and preset, then click Download .mid. No account and no install.
Yes. Files up to 300 MB, the first 10 minutes analysed, full-length MIDI, MusicXML, PNG and SVG, with no watermark and no sign-up.
Slightly. For WAV to MIDI work, a WAV has no compression artifacts, so there is nothing smeared that could turn into a ghost note. Against a good MP3 the difference is small, because the model listens to a 22.05 kHz mono version of either file. What is playing matters far more than the format.
No. A standard 44.1 kHz, 16-bit WAV is plenty. Higher rates and 32-bit float files are mixed to mono at 22.05 kHz before the model runs, so they give essentially the same notes; there is never a reason to upsample.
Up to 300 MB, and the first 10 minutes are analysed. For scale: 10 minutes of stereo WAV is about 106 MB at 44.1 kHz, 16-bit, and about 173 MB at 48 kHz, 24-bit. For longer sessions, bounce just the section you need.
Yes, that is the best way to use it. Solo the track, export it as WAV from bar 1 with reverb off, drop it here, pick the matching preset and download the .mid. In Pro Tools use File > Bounce Mix; in Reaper, File > Render with the track selected.
Yes, if you download MIDI as played: it keeps the original timing from 0:00. Type your project tempo into the converter first and place both files at the same start point. Quantized MIDI instead starts bar 1 on the first detected downbeat.
No. There is no way to store a WAV in MIDI: a .mid file only carries notes and settings such as tempo and key, never sound. To hear the notes as audio again, play them with an instrument in your DAW or render them with MIDI to WAV.
Not for getting the notes. ToMIDI is a web page, so there is no WAV to MIDI converter software to install. Desktop tools such as Melodyne make sense when you want to edit the recording itself inside your DAW.
No. Renaming only changes the label; the file still holds sound. To turn WAV into MIDI the notes have to be transcribed, which is what the converter on this page does.
No. WAV and WAVE are two names for the same format, the RIFF WAVE file. Any .wav or .wave file your browser can play converts here.
Not reliably. The file is decoded by your browser, and in our test Microsoft Edge could not read a 24-bit AIFF. Export WAV instead, or bounce WAV straight away in Logic and GarageBand.
You can, but expect a rough sketch: every instrument lands in one part, and drum hits turn into short random notes because they have no clear pitch. ToMIDI does not separate instruments, so bounce the stems you need and convert them one by one.
No. The file is decoded and converted inside your browser. The page loads the note model, about 1 MB, the first time; after that nothing about your audio leaves your device.
