Convert piano to MIDI from a rough phone recording, then give it the sound of a high-end piano plugin or double it with strings and pads.
ToMIDI turns piano audio to MIDI for free, right in your browser: drop in a piano recording and Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch model writes every note it hears into an editable MIDI file, laid out on a grand staff. No install, no sign-up, and the recording never leaves your device.

Piano audio to MIDI conversion listens to a recording and writes down what the hammers played: which keys, when each one was struck and how long it rang. You end up with a standard .mid file instead of sound, so you can fix a wrong note without recording the take again, change the tempo, or play the performance through a better piano plugin. The converter above opens with the Piano preset: it reads the full 88-key range, keeps notes as short as 50 milliseconds and lays the result out on a grand staff. Converting another instrument? Use the audio to MIDI converter instead.
Convert a Piano RecordingSix reasons producers and pianists use this piano to MIDI converter instead of playing every part in again.
The Piano preset reads all 88 keys, keeps chords together and drops quiet overtones stacked on loud notes, so the result looks like piano playing, not noise.
Switch to the score view and the notes spread across treble and bass staves, ready to check by eye or export as MusicXML.
Decoding, note detection and export run in your browser. Unreleased compositions and client sessions are never uploaded.
Files up to 300 MB with the first 10 minutes analysed, and the complete .mid to download. No 30 second cap, no watermark.
Quantize, set the tempo, snap stray notes to the key, drop uncertain notes and edit single notes with undo, without running the model again.
The file carries tempo, time signature, a valid key signature and an Acoustic Grand Piano program, so it opens sounding like a piano.
For a short piece the whole job takes a minute or two. Here is what to do.
Use an MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG or AAC file, or the sound of an MP4 or WEBM video. You can also record a short phrase from the microphone, up to 60 seconds.
The Piano preset is already selected. Your file is decoded in the browser and Basic Pitch detects the notes, which fill the piano roll while it works.
Look at the detected BPM, key and time signature, play the piano to MIDI result against the original with the Mix control, and clean up dense chords or ghost notes.
Download the .mid quantized or as played, or switch to the score and export MusicXML, PNG or SVG, or print a PDF.
Piano transcription turns a performance into data you can change. These are the tools that matter once the notes are on screen.
Piano music is written on two staves, so the Piano preset lays the result out that way: higher notes on the treble staff, lower notes on the bass staff, which matches the hands in most pieces. Read it against the piano roll, then export MusicXML for MuseScore, Sibelius or Dorico. Learning a song and want simplified piano notes instead of an exact transcription? Song to piano is built for that.
See the Score ViewSustain pedal and a ringing room can leave short ghost notes behind. Every note the model was unsure about gets a dashed outline, so you can see exactly where piano audio to MIDI needed a judgment call. Keep the real ones, or switch off Show uncertain notes to leave them all out of the result and the file.
Check Your RecordingToMIDI detects the tempo and suggests 4/4 or 3/4 from the accents. If the BPM comes out at half or double speed, one click fixes it, or tap the beat yourself. Then choose As played to keep your rubato, or Quantized to snap notes to 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 so the bars line up in your piano roll. For a closer look at tempo alone, the BPM finder helps.

What you are looking at
Real piano audio to MIDI output with the Piano preset, detected at 111.4 BPM in C major. Dashed notes are the ones the model was unsure about; in this take they are mostly short repeats of notes that were still ringing. Load the full sample in the converter above to edit it yourself.
Solo piano suits Basic Pitch well, but piano is polyphonic, so plan to check chords. Most notes of a clear recording come through and the trouble spots are predictable. We quote no accuracy percentages for piano to MIDI until our tests on real recordings are done. Watch for these:
How the piano is recorded matters more than any slider in a piano to MIDI converter. Four habits that pay off every time.
A close microphone or a digital piano's line output gives the clearest attacks. Room mics add reverb that stretches notes.
If you can, record a take with less sustain. Every pedal change makes notes overlap, and overlap is where ghost notes come from.
Lossless files keep the soft upper notes that a low bitrate MP3 can smear. A high bitrate MP3 to piano MIDI works fine as well.
A take recorded to a metronome quantizes cleanly and matches your project tempo. For free playing, keep it as played.

Producers, composers and teachers who already have the performance and want to turn the piano audio to MIDI.
Convert piano to MIDI from a rough phone recording, then give it the sound of a high-end piano plugin or double it with strings and pads.
Improvise freely, then keep the best eight bars as MIDI and tidy them into a score instead of writing them out by ear.
Turn a piano demo into MIDI, quantize it and hand the part to the band, an orchestral template or a notation app.
Turn a recorded exercise into a grand staff score for students, or line up a student's take against the written part.
Sketch a cue on a real piano, convert it and orchestrate from the MIDI in your DAW.
Send clients a piano MIDI file of the part you recorded, so they can change the sound without booking another session.
What people ask before they convert a piano recording, answered plainly, limits included.
Drop a piano recording on the converter at the top of this page. The Piano preset is already chosen, so the notes appear in a piano roll as they are found. Check the tempo and chords, then download the .mid file. No account and no install.
Yes. Files up to 300 MB, the first 10 minutes analysed, and every export free and full length, with no watermark and no sign-in.
Good for clear solo piano, but chords need checking. Heavy sustain pedal blurs notes and adds short ghost notes, and dense low chords can lose an inner voice. We will publish measured results once our tests on real recordings are finished, and quote no percentages until then.
Not the pedal: there are no pedal events, so a pedalled note simply gets longer. Each note does keep a velocity, but treat it as a rough guide rather than a copy of your touch. If pedal and dynamics matter most, a piano-specific model such as Eldoraudio's is built for that.
In the score view the notes split across a treble and a bass staff by pitch, which matches the hands in most music. The MIDI file itself is a single track, so if you need each hand on its own track, split the notes at a pitch in your DAW.
If you want free, full length and private, a browser tool built on Basic Pitch is a strong choice, and ToMIDI adds a Piano preset, a grand staff score and fixes before export. Paid piano-specific services can do better with pedal and fast passages, but most convert only the first 30 seconds for free. Try your own recording in both and compare.
Only roughly. The detector hears every instrument and voice, so a full mix gives a crowded result. Use a solo piano recording or an isolated piano track for clean MIDI. To learn a song by ear, song to piano is the better starting point.
If the piano is in front of you, record MIDI straight over USB: you get exact notes, velocity and pedal. Use piano audio to MIDI for performances that only exist as audio, such as an old recording, an acoustic piano, or a take you have permission to use.
Yes, phone recordings work for piano to MIDI, but expect a rougher result. Phone mics pick up the room, and echo adds faint extra notes. Put the phone close to the piano and away from walls, and choose the highest quality setting your recording app offers.
Download the .mid and drag it onto an instrument track; it already asks for an Acoustic Grand Piano sound. Set the project tempo to the BPM ToMIDI detected, or export the MIDI as played and place it at the start of your recording so it lines up with the audio.
Usually ghost notes from sustain pedal, room echo or overtones. Where the model was unsure they are drawn dashed: turn off Show uncertain notes to drop them, or raise Shortest note in the detection settings.
Yes. MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC, OGG and AAC all work, plus the sound of MP4 and WEBM video. WAV or FLAC keeps the soft high notes best. Files can be up to 300 MB, and the first 10 minutes are converted. Working mostly with MP3s? The MP3 to MIDI page covers that format.
Yes. Switch the result to the score view, then export MusicXML for notation software, PNG or SVG images, or print the score and save it as a PDF. For more layout control, open the MIDI in MIDI to sheet music.
No. Piano audio to MIDI conversion happens inside your browser. The note model, about 1 MB, downloads the first time you convert; the music itself stays on your device.
In our tests a short clip took about 7 seconds the first time, model download included, and about 1 second after that. Longer pieces take longer, especially on phones and older computers, so keep the tab open until it finishes.
No. A paid piano transcription service has a person write the score by ear, which takes days and costs per minute of music. AI piano transcription like this gives you a draft in seconds that you check and correct yourself, which suits producers who want MIDI rather than a finished engraving.
