Bass Tab Generator: Turn Any Bass Line into Tabs for 4 or 5 Strings

To get bass tabs from a song, drop the recording on the bass tab generator below or record your line with a microphone. Spotify's open-source Basic Pitch model follows the bass one note at a time, right in your browser, and ToMIDI writes it as tab for a 4 or 5-string bass in your tuning, with the groove in rhythm under bass-clef notation. Play it with a sampled bass, fix any note, then save ASCII tab, MusicXML, MIDI or a printed PDF. Free, no sign-up, nothing uploaded.

What a Bass Tab Generator Hears in a Bass Line

A bass line is one note at a time, which sounds easy until you try to write it down. A bass tab generator has to hear each pitch and its timing, then choose the string that keeps your fretting hand in one place, so the line feels like something a bass player would actually play. Four things get in the way:

  • Low notes turn to mud on small speakers and phone recordings.
  • The kick drum hits at the same moment as many bass notes.
  • Most notes can be played on two or three strings, so pitch alone does not say where.
  • A line played an octave up, or below the low E, changes every fret.

Why Bassists Use ToMIDI as a Bass Tab Maker

A free bass tab maker built around how bass players read and play.

  • Ears tuned to the low end

The Bass preset listens from B0 to about C4 and keeps one note at a time, so guitar chords and vocals above the line are less likely to sneak into the tab.

  • Four strings or five

Standard, Eb Standard, Drop D or D Standard on a 4-string, or a 5-string with a low B. Every fret is worked out again when you switch.

  • A line that stays in position

The fingering pass plans the whole line for the least shifting, the way a bassist plays one finger per fret. Pick a hand position or cap the stretch if you prefer.

  • The groove, written down

Notes snap to a sixteenth or eighth grid at the detected tempo, with rests and ties, under a bass-clef staff. Fix the tempo or move the bar lines if the downbeat is off.

  • Four bass sounds

Play the tab with a sampled finger, pick, fretless or upright bass, or next to the original recording, while a fretboard lights each note. Loop a bar and slow it to half speed.

  • Nothing leaves your device

Note detection, fingering, playback and export run in your browser. No upload, no account, no queue.

How to Turn Audio to Bass Tab in Four Steps

From a recording to a tab you can read on the bandstand.

  1. Drop an MP3, WAV, M4A, FLAC or other audio file (or a video) up to 300 MB on the bass tab generator, record a take of up to 60 seconds, or open the walking bass sample.

  2. Choose a 4-string or 5-string bass and the tuning the song uses. Line played an octave off? The octave control moves every note at once.

  3. Look at the bars under the notation. If the tempo reads double or the downbeat is late, correct it and the whole tab lines up again.

  4. Listen with a sampled bass or against the original, fix any note, then download ASCII tab, MusicXML or MIDI, or choose Print / Save as PDF.

Step 1 · Upload or record the bass

Inside the Bass Tab Creator

How a recording of a bass line becomes numbers on four or five lines.

Low notes found one at a time

Basic Pitch reads the audio frame by frame. The Bass preset keeps its window between B0 and about C4, low enough for Drop D and the B string of a 5-string, and keeps one note at each moment, so the line reads like a bass line and not like the chords above it. A cleanup pass drops overtones and ringing notes heard twice, and you can raise the sensitivity for soft ghost-like notes or hide the ones the model was unsure about.

Try It on a Bass Line

Four strings or five, in your tuning

A line that walks down to a low D needs a choice. On a 4-string in Standard the bass tab creator moves notes below the low E up an octave so you can play them; tune to Drop D, or switch to a 5-string with a low B, and the same notes land on the low string where the recording put them.

Switch to 5 Strings

The groove in rhythm, not just frets

Plain tab tells you where, not when. Every note here is snapped to a sixteenth or eighth grid at the song's tempo and written under a bass-clef staff, with rests where the line breathes and ties across bar lines, so syncopation and pushes stay visible. Change the time signature or move the bar lines by a beat if the song starts on a pickup.

See the Rhythm

One finger per fret, planned for the whole line

For each note the bass tab maker lists every string and fret that sounds it, then picks the path through the whole line with the least shifting and stretching. A walking line stays in one four-fret box instead of running up and down a single string. Choose a hand position to move the tab up the neck, or cap the stretch at 4 frets for short-scale comfort.

ASCII, MusicXML, MIDI or PDF

Paste ASCII bass tab into a chat or a forum, with the tuning in the header. Open MusicXML with a tab staff in Guitar Pro, MuseScore or TuxGuitar, drop the .mid into your DAW (on the beat grid or exactly as played) to try another bass sound, or choose Print / Save as PDF for a paged chart.

What you are looking at

The line was played on a guitar, so it sounds an octave above a bass. Use the octave control to move it down to bass register, switch between 4 and 5 strings or Drop D, and press play. Switch to ASCII to see the exact text export, or open the sample in the bass tab maker above to change the sound and print it.

How Accurate Is an AI Bass Tab Generator?

It depends on how much else is in the recording, and we quote no accuracy percentages until we have measured real songs. Audio to bass tab works best on an isolated bass or a DI track, which comes out close; a bass line buried in a full band mix is a rough draft. Treat every result as a first pass you check by ear, which is how good bass transcriptions have always been made.

  • In a full mix the kick drum, low piano and guitar notes can add or hide bass notes.
  • Slap, pops, slides and bends are not detected as techniques; you can mark slides, bends and dead notes yourself.
  • Chords and double stops are reduced to a single line.
  • Fast runs of very short notes are the easiest to miss.

Tips for Cleaner Tabs from the Bass Tab Maker

A few minutes of setup and the draft from the bass tab creator needs far less fixing.

Record the DI

A direct signal from your interface has a clear attack on every note. Amp mics and room sound blur the low end.

Tune up first

A flat low E turns into wrong frets. Check every string with the online tuner before you record.

Lock the tempo

Play to the metronome, or read a song's tempo with the BPM finder, so bar lines fall where the groove does.

Pick the right bass

If the line goes below E, choose Drop D or a 5-string before judging the tab, so low notes stay low.

Who Uses a Bass Tab Creator

The bassists, teachers and writers who reach for a bass tab maker.

Bassists learning songs

No tab for that deep cut or that live version? Run the bass track through the bass tab generator and learn from a draft, not from scratch.

Cover and function bands

Run a set list of recordings through the bass tab creator and print charts in the tuning your band plays, on 4 or 5 strings.

Bass teachers

Record a groove in the lesson, print it as tab with notation, and send the student home with the exact line you played.

Transcribers

Let the bass tab generator write the first pass of a bass part, then check it by ear. Bass transcriptions go faster when you start from a draft.

Guitarists covering bass

Play the line on guitar, drop it an octave and read it as bass tab. A tab maker, bass or guitar, should not care which instrument you had at hand.

Producers

Hand a session bassist a tab of the line from your demo, or export the MIDI from the same screen to try other bass sounds in your DAW.

Bass Tab Generator FAQ

Straight answers, including what AI bass tabs cannot do yet.

How do I get bass tabs from a song?

Drop the recording on the bass tab generator at the top of this page, or record it with your microphone. Pick a 4 or 5-string bass and the tuning, check the bars, play the tab back, then download ASCII tab, MusicXML or MIDI, or print a PDF.

Is the bass tab generator free?

Yes, with no sign-up and no monthly limit: files up to 300 MB, the first 10 minutes analysed, and every export is the full tab; the text and PDF files carry a one-line ToMIDI credit. It runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install and no queue.

Does it work for 5-string bass?

Yes. Choose 5-string in the bass tab generator and the low B string is added, so notes down to B0 stay where they were played instead of being moved up an octave.

Which tunings does the bass tab maker support?

4-string: Standard (E A D G), Eb Standard, Drop D and D Standard. 5-string: Standard with a low B (B E A D G). The tab is worked out again the moment you switch.

Can it find the bass line in a full song?

It tries: the Bass preset listens only to the low range and keeps one note at a time. But kick drums, piano left hands and low guitar notes share that range, so a full band MP3 gives a rough draft. An isolated bass stem or a DI recording gives a much cleaner tab.

Does it tab slap, ghost notes or double stops?

No. It writes the pitches and the rhythm of one line. Slap and pop marks, slides and bends are not detected, ghost notes show up only when the model hears a pitch, and double stops are reduced to one note. You can mark a slide, hammer-on, pull-off, bend, vibrato, mute or dead note (x) on any note yourself, and the marks appear in the ASCII tab.

The tab sits too high on the neck. What happened?

Usually the line was played on a guitar or recorded an octave up. Use the octave control to move every note down twelve frets at once, or choose a lower hand position.

How accurate are AI bass tabs?

Close for a clean isolated bass, rough inside a full mix, and never perfect. We publish no percentages until we have measured real recordings. Whatever AI bass tab generator you use, play the tab back against the song before you learn it.

Where can I find free bass transcriptions?

Licensed tab sites and songbooks cover popular songs, and public domain music is free to tab and share. For songs nobody has tabbed, make your own: free bass transcriptions start with a recording on this page and a few minutes of checking by ear.

Is it legal to make bass tabs of songs?

Writing out a bass line for your own practice is what bassists have always done by ear. Sharing or selling tabs of copyrighted songs is different, because the music belongs to its writers and publishers. This is general information, not legal advice; check the rules where you live before you publish a tab of a song you did not write.

Can I open the tab in Guitar Pro or MuseScore?

Yes. Download MusicXML: it carries the notes with a tab staff, and Guitar Pro, MuseScore and TuxGuitar open it for editing. There is no direct .gp file export.

Can I print the tab or save a PDF?

Yes. Choose Print / Save as PDF, with or without the notation staff, then pick Save as PDF in your browser's print dialog. There is no separate PDF download.

Is my recording uploaded?

No. The bass tab creator decodes the audio, finds the notes, plans the fingering, plays and exports, all in your browser tab. Only the note model and the bass sounds download, the first time you use them.

Can I get the bass line as MIDI instead?

Yes: download the MIDI from this page, or use guitar to MIDI with its Bass preset for a piano roll and editing. For guitar parts, the guitar tab generator does the same job on six strings.
